Whole-home surge protection

The Front Range gets grid switching spikes and summer lightning, and modern homes are full of electronics and appliance control boards that do not survive them. A surge protective device wired at the panel clamps those spikes before they reach anything. It installs in about an hour, mounts to a double-pole breaker, and covers the whole house rather than one power strip at a time.

Do any of these sound familiar?

Signs you need this

01

You have replaced an appliance control board

Garage-door, mini-split and oven boards fail from surge damage far more often than from age.

02

Lights flicker or blink when the grid switches

You are seeing the small end of the same phenomenon that delivers the large spikes.

03

A new panel with an open slot

The best and cheapest time to add one is while the panel is already open for other work.

04

A home office, a media room, or a smart home

The replacement cost of what is plugged in is now well past the cost of protecting it.

What it costs

$350to$795

What moves the price
the device rating in kA, panel space, and whether a two-stage setup is worthwhile.
What is included
a UL-1449 listed device, the breaker, installation, and a status check.

Estimated range, reviewed regularly. Your exact price is fixed in writing before any work begins.

What the price covers

  • A check that the panel has space and that the grounding is sound
  • A UL-1449 listed device on its own double-pole breaker
  • Confirmation that the status indicator is live and protecting
  • A note added to the panel schedule so the next electrician knows it is there
  • Advice on point-of-use protection for the few things that need both layers

Start to finish

How the job goes

  1. 1

We check the panel for space and inspects the grounding, which the device depends on.

  2. 2

We mount a UL-1449 listed device on a dedicated double-pole breaker.

  3. 3

The indicator confirms it is live and protecting.

  4. 4

We note it on the panel schedule so the next electrician knows it is there.

Permits and inspection

A panel-mounted device is typically installed under the same rules as adding a breaker. Some jurisdictions want it on a permit and the Town of Parker and Douglas County differ, so we confirm and handle it.

Judd was great. I called for an estimate, they came right out, game a good price, i hired them, they showed up right away, did a great job, took care of my gear and my dogs, and pleasure to work with. Allsafe installed a new 20-amp line for my stereo and installed a whole house surge protector and of course had to fix some issues with my breaker panel because my house was built recently by a homebuilder that took some short cuts.

We originally called Allsafe to look at adding some new lighting to our dining room and fixing some lighting issues in our bathrooms. Judd from Allsafe informed us there were concerns about our electrical service panel but could do the repairs we asked. We put the project on hold due to some urgent medical issues. About 2 months later we had an outlet in the kitchen arc and burn out. Our electrical service panel breakers didn’t trip appropriately. We called Judd back out to assess the situation. He was very thorough in evaluating what was going on with our electrical system. He found multiple issues with our ancient service panel and improper grounding throughout the house. Judd and his team replaced our electrical service panel, multiple outlets, installed new bathroom light fixtures, and installed new recessed lighting in our dining area. They found and fixed a few other minor issues along the way at no additional cost. Working with Allsafe was awesome! All the work they did looks great and we’re very happy we chose them to upgrade our electrical system.

Judson Cushing and the AllSafe Electric team continue to impress. Judson recently installed an outlet above my pool table along with a wall switch for a new pool table light. The placement was thoughtful, the install was clean, and the finished product looks like it was always meant to be there. Functionally perfect and aesthetically spot-on. This is at least the third project AllSafe Electirc has completed for me (which includes installing an auxiliary panel, running new circuits, and troubleshooting problems). As always, Judson and Shawn were very responsive, on time, did a fantastic job in short order. They clearly take pride in their work. It is hard to find contractors who combine technical skill with real customer focus, but AllSafe Electric does. I couldn’t be happier. Judson and Allsafe Electric have absolutely and repeatedly earned my business and recognition.

Jud is so wonderful, he is very communicative, punctual, and transparent with his pricing and the work he does. He did a large electrical project at our house in Parker which included installing a whole new breaker box, ground rods, etc. Not only did he coordinate efficiently with the electric company and county inspectors, but he made the whole process easy and painless for us. Would definitely recommend him and his professional team.

I highly recommend Allsafe Electric! Jud especially is awesome and will make sure you are completely happy with their work. From the free estimate to the actual project (we had our electrical panel updated so we could get more space to add circuits for a basement renovation project), we had an excellent experience. We had three different estimates done, and Allsafe came back with the best price and the most safety features. I liked that Jud came out to do the estimate AND was the main person to come do the actual work. He responds back quickly to any questions you have and has great customer service. We're going to have them add the new circuits in our basement as well. You'll be happy going with Allsafe for your electrical needs!

Jud and his team have done a ton of work at our house over the years. Most recently hooking up our hot tub. He’s replaced our panel, set us up with a generator and much more. Jud is responsive, prompt, reasonably priced, and he’s genuinely a nice guy. Finding contractors who will respond and actually show up is hard, but I never worry when I have an electrical issue. Jud is the best!

We did not have power coming through a circuit in our garage. When I called on a Friday morning, I fully expected we would have to wait until after the weekend for an electrician to come out. But Jud was able to come diagnose the issue within just a few hours! I was very impressed, and so happy that he was also able to fix the problem very quickly. Jud was very professional, explained everything so well, and is very trustworthy.

Common questions

Does this replace my power strips?

It works with them. The panel device takes the large external spikes, and point-of-use protectors handle the small stuff generated inside the house. Two layers is the right setup for expensive electronics.

How long does a surge protector last?

The device sacrifices itself absorbing surges. A good one lasts years and has an indicator light, and when that goes out the module is replaced rather than the whole unit.

Will it stop a direct lightning strike?

No device stops a direct strike to the house. It handles the far more common nearby strikes and grid transients, which is what actually damages most equipment.

Can you add it without a new panel?

Yes, as long as there is space for a double-pole breaker and the grounding is sound. We check both before quoting.

Where we do surge protection

We handle surge protection across Parker and the surrounding south metro. That includes Parker, Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, Centennial and The Pinery, plus every other town on our service area page. Each town page lists its own permit authority and electric utility, which genuinely differ across Douglas, Arapahoe and Elbert counties.
